I think the documentary is very interesting and informative, because it talks about subjects that maybe we are not used to see in a class room, but still are related to things that we see on the daily bases.
It talks basically about dog’s intelligence, but not in a common sense. Is not the understanding of dogs that we are used to talk about, like when dogs do tricks, just for the fun of it. This dogs were really amazing!
Personally, I was amazed by the smelling (or sniffing) capacity of some breeds. This ability is shown in an exceptional way in hounds, dogs that have been use for centuries to hunt. There was a dog named Sophie, and she was really shocking! She smelled a bullet shell, and was able to locate the person who shot the gun, even 3 kilometers away! She never lost the track. This breed is known for their great sniffing capacity, they can smell one drop of sweat in an area of 11 kilometers!
In the documentary is also shown a sort of “exclusion intelligence”, to understand new concepts, or learn new words. It is said that dogs understand about 160 words, the dog in the documentary, was way beyond that. His name was Rico, and he recognized at least 200 different objects, and when a new one was presented to him, he identified it by exclusion, because he knew that it was not in his memory before.
Another interesting subject showed, was the tail movement. A mathematical model stipulated that dog’s tail movement acted just like emotions in humans. They also have “lateralization” the right side of the brain manage the “bad feelings” like anger and fear, and the left side of the brain manage the “good feelings” like happiness and security. That’s why when the dog was in front of the owner, moved the tail to the right side, showing he was happy!
